Club History
The club was formed on 1st January 1999, when the Hambleton Swim Squad and Thirsk Swordfish Swimming. Club merged. It was felt that an amalgamation of the talents of the two squads was the best and most cost-effective way forwards.
The Club has always had just under 200 members, ranging from the very young who are just embarking on their swimming journey, to Masters swimmers with over 25yrs of experience, all competing at Club, County and National levels. and for its size has achieved a great many successes at all levels against far larger clubs.
Costs have doubled over the 25 years and it has been hard at times to continually ask parents to pay more money for their offspring to swim, but we remain very competitive in our charges when compared with clubs of a similar size. The Committee arranges fund raising events throughout the year to try to keep the costs down and is always on the lookout for new ways to raise money. 2024 saw the introduction of company sponsorships which has been a great asset to the club enabling us to rebrand and continue to plan for future sustainability.
The Team is run on a voluntary basis with all teachers, gala officials, committee members and helpers giving their services for free. Our Head Coach is the only member of the Team who is reimbursed for her services. It can be quite difficult sometimes to persuade parents that they do in fact have that little bit of time spare to help with their club and that their efforts can be very rewarding.
All members of TWHST should be very proud of their club, it is recognised throughout the North East as being competitive but fair and incredibly supportive of all it’s swimmers.
